Neck Pain

What causes neck pain?
The neck has a substantial amount of motion and supports the weight of the head. However, because it is less protected than the rest of the spine, the neck can be susceptible to injury and disorders that produce pain and restrict motion. In some people, neck problems may be the source of pain in the upper back, shoulders, or arms.

Neck pain can be caused by many factors, including:

  • Cervical disc degeneration
  • Injury
  • Neck strain

What are the symptoms of neck pain?

  • Pain that is continuous and persistent
  • Pain radiating down the arms
  • Headaches
  • Muscle spasms
  • Numbness and tingling in upper extremities

Is there treatment for it?
There are different options for treating your pain that can be discussed with your doctor. Treatment for low back pain can include:

Medications
Analgesics and anti-inflammatory medications may relieve pain. Steroids taken either orally or injected into your spine can help deliver a high dose of inti-inflammatory medicine. If you are experiencing spasms, your doctor may prescribe a muscle relaxant.
Physical Medicine
Medications and therapeutic treatments combined often relieve pain enough for you to regain your quality of life. A physical therapist can guide you through specific strengthening exercises and stretches to reduce pain and stiffness.

How can I prevent neck pain?

  • Exercise
  • Proper posture and lifting techniques
  • Avoid smoking
